Lonely Blackbird began with a single sound — a blackbird in my backyard in Vihti, recorded on a quiet morning. It just arrived, as it seems to do every year. That recording opened a door for creating this song. The lead voice is a sax-type sound from the ASM Diosynth, a digital wind instrument. A Rhodes-type sound, bass, and a softer voice fill the rest. Instrumental, unhurried.

This track is inspired by my recent trip to Greece. In June, I visited Leptokarya Beach and recorded the sound of Aegean Sea waves crashing onto the shore. You’ll hear those waves at the very beginning and end of the song, making the whole piece feel like a journey in itself.

I also got to play my 6-string (3 pairs) bouzouki, along with its tiny cousin, the baglamas—and of course, some keyboards too. And for this song I also made a video playing those instruments. The closest genre is Entekhno, as this combines orchestral music with Greek instruments. The song is instrumental, a bit sad and romantic at the same time.

This song was inspired by Paddington Station in London—its surrounding streets and the underground beneath it. You can hear that atmosphere throughout the piece. It’s a place where around 180,000 people pass through on an average day—tens of millions each year. Amid the constant movement, there’s also a sense of permanence. And if you pause and look a little closer, you notice details that are easy to miss.

It feels like a farewell scene from an old black-and-white film, at times reminding me of The Godfather movies, or some early 20th century black and white movie scene, echoes of eras already gone. While experimenting with Arturia Analog Lab V—its vocoder and other sounds—I stumbled upon the seed of this song. I became fascinated by a repeating melodic line, inspired by the motifs of Slavic church music. As the piece evolved, it began to take shape as a story in my mind: a woman who arrives by plane and, with determination, sets out to put things right—while also discovering who she truly is. The lyrics themselves don’t hold much literal meaning, but they’re enough to ignite the imagination and invite each listener to create their own narrative. That’s certainly how it works for me

This song was inspired by the idea of the wind carrying a tale from far away. It circles around you just long enough to whisper its story, then drifts onward, leaving behind a glimpse into the lives of people you’ve never met. There is sadness in it, yet also a rising sense of hope. In the end, it reminds us that wherever we go in the world, people are, at heart, much the same.
